The ISM-FAST application deadline is January 30, and taxes need to be mailed to ISM-FAST by February 10. You can find the application here. Blood Drive February 12

All members of the Prep community are invited to help save a life and participate in a blood drive on Sunday February 12, 2017 from 9 am to 3:30 pm at Huntington Hospital. This event is organized by the Student Community Action Council (SCAC), and this year will be a competition against Poly and other local schools to encourage participation. We need the help of Prep parents to ensure that Prep comes out on top!

Please plan to park at the structure across from the Emergency Room (711 S. Fairmount Ave). Parking validation will be available at the donor center. Be sure to eat a full meal before donating, drink a lot of water the night before, and bring a photo ID. Contact the blood donor recruiter, Jackie Baca-Geary, directly at 626.397.5796 with any questions.

STEAM & Service FAIR

Prep's STEAM & Service Fair will be February 9 and 10. The projects will be on display for public viewing during the open house on Thursday, Feb 9 from 7:00-8:30 pm in the gym. Although the fair is only a few weeks away, it's not too late for students to begin a project. Students interested in participating should contact Laura Kaufman, lkaufman@flintridgeprep.org, as soon as possible.

Flintridge Fever—Let’s Groove Tonight—coming March 4!

By now, you should have received the invitation for Flintridge Fever, Let’s Groove Tonight, our benefit hosted by the Flintridge Preparatory School Parents Association. It’s going to be a groovy night with dinner, silent and live auctions and, of course, dancing on March 4 at Vibiana in DTLA.

Space is limited, so send in your RSVP now. You can do so by returning your invitation by mail or through www.bidpal.net/prepbenefit2017. You can also get updates on the benefit and auction items by following Flintridge Fever, Let’s Groove Tonight on Facebook.

All funds raised in connection with this event are earmarked for a new atrium outside the recently renovated Norris Auditorium. With the construction of a fully enclosed atrium, Prep will have a beautiful indoor dining space, a gathering space for students and a facility that will serve as a special events hub.

Athletics Update

The winter sports teams finished the preseason and have opened the Prep League with CIF playoffs anticipated for four teams. Notably in CIF, the girls basketball team is ranked #2, and the boys soccer team is #7. Girls soccer and boys basketball are in second place in the League standings, and girls water polo had a thrilling triple overtime win over La Salle. Come on out and cheer on the Prep athletes!

The ACL will be off and running in the second semester, rejoining the Boys and Girls Club tutoring program on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and organizing a Pack the Place for girls basketball vs Chadwick at 6:00 pm on January 31. The ACL will also be preparing for a cleanup of the Homeless Adult Center in Pasadena on Saturday, February 4.

The ACL would like to invite everyone in the Prep community to be a part of the initiatives throughout the year. If you are interested in helping, please contact Alex Rivera, Director of Athletic Initiatives, at 818.949.5564 or arivera@flintridgeprep.org. ACL news, events, updates and photos can be found on the school website.

College Counseling

We’re excited to begin working with the Class of 2018! Juniors have been assigned to a college counselor and were made aware of their assignment prior to the holiday break. Assignments remain posted in the College Counseling office. The first assignment for each junior is to complete the Junior Questionnaire, after which they can schedule the first meeting with their counselor. Juniors will receive more information during the first class, the week of January 23.

Juniors who plan to take the March SAT should register now, as the deadline is the first week of February. Juniors who plan to take the May SAT should also register now to guarantee the most convenient testing site; the registration deadline is the first week of April. For juniors interested in taking the April ACT, the registration deadline is the first week of March.

Both sophomores and juniors should register now for the June SAT Subject tests. Students must use Prep’s CEEB code (052375) when registering for standardized tests.

Sophomores and juniors: For those curious to learn more about pursuing a special talent in the arts at the college level, we are offering a College Arts Information Panel on Wednesday, February 15 at 6:00 pm in the Chandramohan Library. Interested families are encouraged to join us.

Sophomores and juniors: We encourage you to research academic summer programs. Sophomores, you’ll want to see Mr. Hare, 10th grade dean, to access the college counseling summer program database, and juniors may direct questions to their college counselor.

Internships for Prep Alums Classes 2013-2016

Summer vacation offers a college students a chance to relax and recharge their batteries. For young Prep alumni, however, the summer can also be a time to gather information on and experience in the fields that they may be considering for future careers. Many of these internships are already available, and more are constantly being added. These positions are competitive, and many are part of nationwide programs, so it’s important to start the process now.

The Flintridge Prep Fathers Club Internship Program, now in its fourth year, is always seeking additional internship opportunities. We invite you to ask your company about setting up an internship opportunity.

For more information on Summer Internships, please contact Flintridge Prep Fathers Club Representative David Hitchcock, VP Internships, or visit the Fathers Club Internship Program website.

Fathers Club Meeting

On Tuesday, February 7, 2017, we welcome the fathers to the new calendar year with a mixer/meeting in the Chandramohan Library at 6:30 pm. We will have several guest speakers. Mr. Rob Lewis and Ms. Jen Bascom will discuss how training and experience in performing arts develops life skills; Mr. Tim Bradley, Mr. Nick Ponticello, and Mrs. Lesley Fox will discuss how Prep applies STEAM theories across subjects to provide greater context for each subject, enlarging students’ perspectives. Mr. Garrett Ohara will talk about Prep athletics.

Golf Tournament, Silent Auction and Dinner

On Monday, May 1, 2017, the Fathers Club will host the annual Flintridge Prep Golf Tournament, Silent Auction and Dinner. This annual event benefits the John Plumb ’64 Endowment Fund for Faculty Professional Development and is a unique opportunity for parents, faculty and alumni to spend the day in support of Prep.

We’ve already started preparing! If you’re interested in helping, please contact John Brown. If you are interested in purchasing event tickets, click here.

Parents Association

The next Parents Association meeting will be held February 14 at 8:30 am at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Our guest speaker will be Gloria Díaz Ventura, Director of College Counseling. The meetings are a great way to meet other Prep parents and hear the latest Prep updates from Peter Bachmann.

The 2017-2018 Board Slate will also be presented at this meeting. Thank you to our Parliamentarian, Susan Rossi, and the nominating committee for their time and efforts setting the slate for the 2017-2018 Executive Board and committee chairs.
